Chartered Society of Physiotherapy

CSP facts and figures

The CSP acts as the professional, educational and trade union body for over 59,000 chartered physiotherapists, physio students and physiotherapy support workers.

Founded by four nurses in 1894, the CSP was awarded its Royal Charter in 1920 and has become the profession's leading membership organisation in the UK.

CSP members as 100 people
If our current membership was represented as 100 people:

80 would be female
20 would be male

Of those:

70 would work in the NHS
11 would work in private practice
10 would be students
4 would be physiotherapy support workers
6 would be overseas trained
6 would be non-practicing
3 would be retired
and less than 2 would work overseas

Our staff support members in their clinical and professional development and protect their interests in the workplace, when needed. Our services include:

professional guidance, such as access to our publications and a professional advice service
news via Frontline magazine and the weekly Physiotherapy News bulletin
insurance and legal protection
networks, both professional and regional
events and courses, such as Physiotherapy UK
advice on workplace rights, such as pay, annual leave and health and safety.
We promote physiotherapy and exert our influence on behalf of the profession, encouraging members to get involved wherever possible.

We also work alongside members to keep physiotherapy at the forefront of health and well-being.

A few facts about us...
Only one in five of us is a physiotherapist
We have 94 full-time members of staff and 49 part-time
We employ 37 men and 106 women
112 members of staff are based in London, 24 are home workers and seven work in our regional offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

Our skill mix
It’s a common misconception that everyone at CSP is a physiotherapist. We have 143 (as of July 2019) staff, covering a broad range of roles.

We also have teams covering other areas, from policy and research to marketing and design, as well as staff who support the organisation's governance and day to day functions such as finance, facilities and membership administration.

Physiotherapists at the CSP
While we aren't all physiotherapists, out of our 143 staff, 26 of us are. Physiotherapists at the CSP are employed in the following roles:

Three members of the leadership team
Four assistant directors
Four team leaders
13 professional advisers
Two trade union negotiators

We offer member support by way of professional guidance and advice on workplace rights, and have several other departments too. One of them is our dedicated enquiries team, who are there to answer any questions from members, stakeholders or the public.
